Best Home Workouts with Dumbbells:
#1. Dumbbell Floor Press – Simple, safe and powerful. All that you do is get a set of moderately heavy dumbbells (whatever that may be for you) and lie back on the floor with the dumbbells at your side. Reach down with the dumbbells up so that your forearms form a right angle to the floor and are positioned out perpendicular to your chest.
If you can’t lift the dumbbells then they are too heavy.
Basically, this is like doing the benchpress exercise without the bench. It’s safer because you can’t hurt yourself, and believe it or not it’s actually better for you strength wise. The reason is that after every rep you’re forced for your muscles to come to a complete halt… Only after your elbows are resting on the floor gently do you begin to push the dumbbells back up. This gives the exercises an isometric like element – always a great thing. Be sure to keep your core and shoulder girdle tight throughout the movement… Your back should form a platform for you to press off of against the floor.
#2. Dumbbell Squat Press – all right, take your dumbbells and bring them up so that the backend is resting against your shoulders and your elbows are sticking out slightly in front of you, parallel to each other. This position should be comfortable… You should be supporting the dumbbells with her shoulders and your arms fairly equally.
Now, with your feet shoulder width apart and in a stance that is most comfortable, slowly dip down until your thighs are about 45° to the floor, and then explode upwards pressing the dumbbells up simultaneously above your head. The end position of the movement is you standing straight up with your arms holding the dumbbells off of your head in a neutral position (in other words, palms facing each other).
Now as fast as you can safely handle, dip your hips back into the 45° squat and repeat the explosive movement for approximately 5 to 6 reps. The amount of weight that you’re using should be more than you could normally shoulder press. As always, keep your core tight throughout the entire movement… Inhale on the way down, exhale on the way up.
This is one of the best fat burning and muscle building workouts with dumbbells exercises…PERIOD!
#3. Dumbbell Swings – This exercise is exactly what it sounds like. What you’re going to do is take a pretty heavy dumbbell (or kettle bell if you have one), grab it on one side with both hands. It should be between your legs and you should have a fairly wide stance.
Lift up the dumbbell so that it’s hanging between your legs, and you’re going to try and swing the dumbbell as high up as you can. Again, you should be using a fairly heavy weight that makes it difficult to get it up any higher than parallel to the floor.
This exercise will really blast your glutes and your lats and your trapezius muscles… You just come back and tell me if you’re not sore after trying a few sets of these.
Now, I’ve given you everything that you need to get started with very solid total body home workouts with dumbbells, but I understand you probably want a recommendation for a home workout program that incorporates some of these movements.
While it may not contain the exact same movements, I can definitely recommend the P90X program. Of all the workouts with dumbbells, P90X sticks out as the best because it provides extreme muscle growth as well as fat loss. This means that you are going to get shredded after 90 days.
Especially (and I want to emphasize this, especially!) If you follow the diet. The program will build a solid base of muscle for your entire upper body, and with the plyometric exercises you’ll get lots of lower body work as well.
No matter which way you choose, there’s no doubt that dumbbells are a great alternative for the home workout enthusiast. There’s no need to go out to the gym when you can just pick up a set of dumbbells and get a solid workout from the comfort of your living room (or garage). The tips that I’ve given you in this article should give you everything that you need to get started with some of the best home workouts with dumbbells of your life.
